  3. I think that autism is very interesting because. I also think savent syndrome is pretty cool to. I think it is cool because Savent Syndrome ocurrs when a person with below normal intelligence displays a special talent or ability in a specific area. I think Mark Haddon is a strong author he has many awards and i think it is cool that he is born in England. His childs namr is Alfie.

  6. I love this book. Espically after looking up all the information I really learned a lot more that i didn't know about autism. I cant wait to keep reading this book and learn more.

  7. After researching, the most interesting fact I found was that with Savant Syndrome, it gives people intellectual gifts in specific areas. I find this fascinating because they could be better at one thing than a normal person with out the disorder could be. With Aspergers, I found it intriging that people with this disorder have a very high intrest in one topic. For instence they could know everything there is to know about one specific thing.

  9. the thing i found most interesting is the fact that autism is really kind of a mystery theres symptoms and some people call a disablility but autistic kids can do stuff that other people cant

  11. after reading articles about autism i learned several things i found very interestiong like: first, children with autism normally have problems with social interaction, verbal and communication. i thought this was very interestiong because i never thought that people who were autistic had difficulties in social interaction i just new that they were always in there own world but never thought it was actually a disability. i also learned that they are very independent individual which means that they dont fallow what other people do and they dont like to interact with other people.i also learned that asperger syndrome is a disorder nameeed after Hans Asperger who discovered the behavior patterns that people with this desorder had. i find that interesting because if a person can find out exactly what behavior is caused by the disorder then maybe someone can find a cure for those behavior so the person can act normal.

  12. I beilve that autism is a very sad thing. The author Mark Haddon who was born in Northamption in 1962 wrote many interesting books about autism. Autism symptoms include, pretend play, social interactions and verbal and nonverbal communications. Another syndrome is Savant Syndrome. Its when a person has mental disabilites but has an extraordinary talent that is connected with immense memory. It gives people with the sydrome unusual intellect or artistic abilities. I find all this very interesting becasue when though the person will be "slow" or not able to communicate in certain ways, but some of them will also have a unusual talent which allows them to do things that normal people couldnt do easily.

  13. I cant believe that autism is a disease that may not appear until the child is two years old. It suprises me most because when you do have it its such a life altering disease and for your family not to know about until your two is incrediable to me. Also i found it starteling that 10% of people with autism also have Savants syndrome. This disease is more common in men than in women. Somthing i found that was interesting was almost all cases of savants syndrome occur in people with IQ over 40. The Author Mark Haddon was born in Northampton in 1962. He studied for a BA in English at Merton College, Oxford, graduating 1981.

  14. Have you ever wandered what Savant Syndrome is? Well it's a rare condition in which the person has mental disabilities but has an extraordinary talent that is connected with immense memory.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I found savant syndrome especially intriguing because its a rare condition where the person with a disorder has one or more area of brillance. In the 1988 movie Rain Man, it showed the crowd, about people who have a amazing yet rare disorder. Dustin Hoffman portrays a character called Raymond, who has autistic disorder. Raymond has an amazing memory for baseball statistics, the phone book, and he can count cards in Las Vegas.

  18. After reading various articles, I found some very interesting facts. One of these facts is that Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first three years of life. This was interesting to me, because the disorder occurs very early in a child's life. Another fact that I learned was that people who have Asperger syndrome may have difficulty understanding sarcasm or humor. This interested me, because I use a lot of sarcasm and humor in my everyday conversations, and finding out that it's hard for some people to understand it is shocking. One more fact that I learned was that Savant syndrome is much more common in men than in women. This interested me, because I don't understand why it is more common in men than in women, and I would like to find out. These are only a few of the many interesting facts that I learned.

    ReplyDelete
  19. that is true ryan s2 haha

  20. One of the interesting facts I found about autism was how early it can be detected. Parents can see it in a child at about 18 months old and they can start receiving help by the age of 2. I find this remarkable that at such a young age you can see and begin to treat this disease. Another thing that interested me was the fact that people with Aspersers may suffer with social interactions they can be extremely intelligent.
On a related note I found Savants Syndrome intriguing as well because people who suffer with it are often extremely talented in certain areas and become prodigies of sorts sometimes. This is interesting because while they may lack in certain areas do to a physical or mental impairment they flourish beyond belief in their talent, like the arts.

  21. From reasearching Autism, I thought that it was interesting that it was four times more common in boys than girls. Also, I learned that Savant Syndrome and Asperger Syndrome was a type of autism spectrum disrder condition. I thought it was sad that 1 in 150 babies born are diagnosed with autism and theres no real diagnosis. I also found that many of the books that Mark Haddon write have weird names and titles, such as The Talking Horse and the Sad Girl and the Village Under the Sea.

  22. autism is interesting b/c it has many symtoms

  23. Thanks j-dog you gave me the chills also

  25. I agree with nathan that autism is a very sad disease. I dont understand why only some people have autism thrust apoun them. But in all of my expierences with autistic kids they are normally the nicest people i have ever met. They also dont judge you and really like you as you.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree with mackenzie..its definetly sad that a child isnt diagnosed with autism until they are at least 2 years old. Because it is totally a life aultering desiease, not just for the child, but for the parents too.

  27. that wasnt stephanie... wow

  28. So far, in reading this book it seems to be very interesting. I did not know that autism appeared in the first 3 years of life as well as affects development of social na communication skills. The asperger syndrom is very much related to autism which i didn't know and you can have difficulty interacting socially, repeating behaviors, and often are clumsy. The savant syndrome is interesting in that you can have one or more areas of expertise. As well as being a writer, Mark Haddon is an illustrator for magazines and a cartoonist for many cartoon strips.

    ReplyDelete
  29. For me, Autism and Savant Syndrome is particularly interesting because one of my sister's best friends was Austistic. I think that nobody really gives people with Autism enough credit, because they are amazing people, having a perspective of the world that none of us will ever have.I am especially fascinated with Savant Syndrome because even though their social skills are lagging, they make up for it in sheer talent. Many savants can hear a concerto from Bethoven only once, and then play it like they themselves composed it!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think that Savantism (not sure if that's a word) it a very interesting thing. I think it's sad that people who get it are burdened with it, since they lack many simple (but extremely imprtant) things that almost everyone else has. I also think it's really cool how they have some sort of specialty that they are better than almost anyone one else at. They're kind of like superheroes without capes.

    ReplyDelete
  31. After reading these articles, i learned interesting facts that I never knew. First, i learned that children with autism may have distress when their normal daily routine is changed. I think that this is very sad because routines change everyday and it must be hard for the parents of an autistic child to try and keep their activities usual. Autistic children also have a hard time making friends and carrying on a normal conversation. Another thing that i learned is that children with Aspergers Syndrome have an obsessive interest in single objects but they have a high level of vocabulary. Mark Haddon wrote the book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the night. He graduated from Oxford University in 1981 and he worked with children and adults with mental and physical disabilities.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree with Nathan and Makenzie that autism is a very sad disease. In my old school, I worked with a lot of children who had this disease and they were always polite and sweet.

    ReplyDelete
  33. After I read these articles I learned three interesting things.
    1. One thing I learned is that Autism disorder is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior.
    2. Another thing I learned after reading these articles is that about 10% of people with autistic disorders have savant abilities, and in the non autistic population, including those with mental retardation, the pravalence is less than 1%.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think that people with savant syndrome are interesting because they can have the ability to play the piano and musical instruments by using there ears and find the perfect pitch to play.It is very rare ,but they have advantages.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Autism must be a very difficult disease to go through. You need lots of family support to get through it, even if you have it or you have to help someone that has it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. autism is found in the first three years of life. if you dont have it by your third birthday then you are most likely off the hook. some children seem normal from ages 1 to 2 and suddenly loose all skills they have learned such as talking. what thrills me the most is that kids dont try to become friends with the kids, they are normal people they just ahave a little disorder. normal kids just walk by autistic kids like they dont exist.

    ReplyDelete
  37. three things that i found were autism, asperger syndrome, and savant syndrome. autism is a disorder that affects the brain's devolment of social and communication skills. The author, Mark Haddon has it and writes many stories about it. Asperger syndrome is considered a high functioning from of autism. Lastly, Savant syndrome is a rare condition with development disorders that involve the brain. I think it is unfortunete for people who have it and very sad.

    ReplyDelete
  38. After researching Autism, I feel that I am going to understand the book better. Just the disease in general sparks my interest. I never knew that it appeared in the first 2 years of life. That's something that would affect the diseased, entire family. I was also oblivious to the fact that Autism usually effects boys rather than girls. I found that quite interesting. Don't get me wrong, this entire subject is extremley upsetting, but it certainly intrigues my intrest. (:

    ReplyDelete
  39. After researching Autism, I now know a lot more on this disease than I did in the past. I learned that most of the parents learn that their child is autistic by the time they are 18 months old. Children that have autism usually struggle with: pretend play, Social interactions, Verbal and nonverbal communication. Many people with autsim have communication probelms as well, which can vary from not being able or mantain a social conversation, can develop a language very slow or just not at all, or use nonsense rhyming. Children with Autsim cannot make friends as easy as other children and can't interact in a social enviroment as well.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The fact that most autistic children apear perfectly normal is a really great thing. I feel really bad that they have different social behaviors, but they all should still be treated equally. The good news is that in my research i found out that Autism can be treated, and there are a variety of treatment options which can be very helpful. I've read storys about children with autism and i've realized how difficult there life may be. What especially hurts me is how other people treat the autistic.

    ReplyDelete
  41. i know so many people that have "autism" and all along i just thought they were dumb... but now I understand their situation.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I would have thought that Mark Haddon had autism! but nevermind

    ReplyDelete
  43. I also agree with Leeana because I don't think you can truley understand what Autism is, until you know someone who has it. There is a kind young man at my church, who has it, and sometimes it really upsets me to see some of the trouble that he has. Well said Leeana.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think i am actually goinqq to enjoy this book. It is a topic out of the ordinary and that catches my eye.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think that diseases like Asperger's Syndrome are awesome! They give some kids the ability to do things that have never happend before! for instance, there are kids that are 4 and 5 years old that can recite entire speaches that can last for 10-15 mins!

    ReplyDelete
  46. A few of the things that I found interesting with my research are the effects of an autistic person's behavior because of the disease. For example, I didn't realize that as many as 40% of autistic people didn't speak or that autistic people had a very hard time understanding other people's emotions.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think the articles I read were preety interesting. the truth is I have an autistic cousin so I know how other families feel. I found that autism can show up as early as 3 years after birth. Also that Mark Haddon has some strangley titeled books, like The Talking Horse.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree with Megant4... From my research, I had learned that Autism is much more widespread and much more serious then I had originally thought. In my reseach experts estimate 3 to 6 out of every 1,000 will suffer from Autism. I had also learned that there are many forms of Autism such as Asperger Syndrome and Savant Syndrome which effect the indidual's behavior greatly. For this I believe that we should help in anyway to find a cure to Autism and its many other forms of syndromes.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I was suprised to see that scientists estimate 3 or 6 out of 1,000 children will have ASD. Also that males are 4 times more likely to have ASD than females. Also that some people with savants can show no signs of abnormalities other than the unique abilities that they have aquired. I was suprised that Mark Haddon was both Atheist and a vegetarian.

    ReplyDelete
  50. 1. I found out that Autism starts in the first 3 years of life and i found that to be sad. I found it to be sad because children at that age are learning to talk and play ,but they have to deal with autism. 2. I found out that some treatments for Autism are Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech therapy. This was intresting to me because my mom is a Physical Therapist which means she deals with Autism. I found these things to be very interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I learned that Autism can come in varying degrees-- high-functional to non-functional. Aspergers is catagorized as high functional, and I found it interesting that people who have this can also have a very high IQ, as with Savant Syndrome. However, Savant skills can by "training the talent" help increase language and social ability in their daily lives.

    ReplyDelete
  52. From the things I learned about autism and such, I thought about how bad it must be to be one of the kids that has to live with one of those disorders. That must be really difficult.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Everything about these diseases is very interesting. What was interesting about all these diseases is as follows:

Autism is interesting, because of what kind of disease it is. It developes in the first 3 years of life, and affects the brain's normal functions.

Asperger syndrome is interesting, because it is the opposite of Autism. It is opposite, as in, the brain is high functioning. This means people with asperger syndrome have a high brain developement, and does not have very good social skills.

These are the things that I found the most interesting about these diseases.

    ReplyDelete
  54. i agree with Andy and Marysia

    ReplyDelete
  55. I learned that autism is more common in boys than girls. It is affecting over four hundred thousand people in america now. I also learned that people with autism have difficulty understanding other people's emotions. It must be hard for the caretakers and occupational therapists that put in time to take care of people with autism. but its good that they are understanding.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I just found out what Savant syndrome is and that it came from the movie Rainman. I always wanted to know what mental disease that movie was about. I found out that it improves someones specific ability such as musical talent and academics.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Autism is a disorder of neural development that is characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior.

  60. Yes Nathan I agree with you. Autism is a very sad thing, and I hope they can find some way to help cure it. People who have autism or asperger syndrome have trouble interacting with people and can't understand different types of emotions or body languages. Although, savant syndrome is much different. It is rare and can give somebody expertise or brilliance on a certain subject.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Famous people with autism: Albert Einstein,Bill Gates, Mark Twain, Thomas Jefferson, Beethoven, Thomas Edison, Mozart, Van Gogh, Emily Dickinson, Isaac Newton, George Bernard, Shaw Henry Ford.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think though it is a horrible thing that very unlucky kids are subjected to, I am extremely intrigued that kids with asperger syndrome or savant syndrome do excel at something. People who are autistic can have a normal life, though it will seem tough at times, and for that I am thankful.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I'm surprised that you have to wait until you are two years old to find out if you have autism or not. I think autism is very.. interesting. I feel bad for thoughs people in the world who have autism and savant syndrome. But they seem like happy people. I agree with Katies comment. But it also improves on their musical talent.

    ReplyDelete
  64. After researching and finding out things i didnt know about different types of autism, i believe autism is a very sad disease. I learned that autism effects there social interaction to the point where its possible to have no friends. I also learned that asperger syndrome is a neurobiological disorder named for a Viennese physician.

    ReplyDelete
  65. By during research on these topics i learned that it would be really difficult to have one of these disorders.Even though its sad i think that it is interesting that Asperger syndrome is the opposite of Autism. Autism is interesting, because it developes in the first 3 years of life, and affects the brain's normal functions. and it is cool that even though Mark Haddon has a dissorder he is still sucessful and a author.

    ReplyDelete
  66. After researching about Autism I found it interseting that it affects about 1 in every 150 kids, but no one knows what causes it. Some scientists think that some kids might be more likely to get autism because it or similar disorders run in their families. Servant Syndrome occurs in males more frequently than in females in a ratio of 6 to 1. It inrtigued me that it has been estimated that there may be fewer than 100 cases of Savant Sydrome reported in the world literature in the past 100 years.

  67. In my expirince on this fine computer, i have learned what many things mean and why they mean that. Autism is "a sever develpoment disorder that begins at birth ORRRRRR at the age 2-3. I did not know this before period seven in Mrs Juckers classroom.

Also savants are people that might look menatally retarded but are really a "picasso" inside. They hide many talents likee... Memorization, Lightening calculation, Calendar calculating, Musical ability, Artistic ability, Language ability.

Mark Haddon (born 26 September 1962).

  68. I found autism to be very....interesting. I feel bad for everybody with autism or savant syndrome. I agree with brandon g6 and his comment. I also agree with karen when she says that she's surprised about the circumstances

  69. I learned that Autism developes in the first 3 years of life, and affects the brain's normal functions. I also learned that people with savant syndrome are interesting because they can have the ability to play the piano and musical.Asperger syndrome is interesting . It is interesting because the brain is high functioning. This means people with asperger syndrome have a high brain developement, and does not have very good social skills.:)

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think that autism is very interesting, because even though people with it may have bad social skills, they may also have incredable abilities. I was surprised, like Karen, to find that you can't find out if someone has autism until they are two.

    ReplyDelete
  71. After finding information about Autism, Aspergers, and Savant Syndrome, I found many interesting facts. One of the most interesting things I learned about autism is that it appears in the first 3 years of life, and affects the brain's normal developement of social and communication skills. I found this interesting because I wasn't aware that autism could be detected to early in a person's life. Another interesting fact I found, was that autistic people have a very hard time understanding other people's emotions, which is really sad. I had never heard of savant syndrome until now, so I was fascinated to hear that this syndrome occurs when a person below intelligence displays a special talent or ability in a specific area. I think that is a really good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Autism is very interesting. I learned that it appears in the first 3 years of life, their social and communication skills are affected. I also found out that Asperger syndrome is a high form of autism. Savant syndrome is a rare condition and is not a recognized medical diagnosis.

    ReplyDelete
  73. 2-3 things i learned about autism, is that it can surface during the first 2 years of someones life. I also learned that although a child may look like he/she is learning and progressing, they may regress as autism surfaces. Even the most gentle touch may cause someone with autism with discomfort, and as in the book, Chris attaked both the police officer, and his dad

    ReplyDelete
  74. Autism was a very intriquing subject to me. One thing I found were some signs to help parents recongnize if their child is autistic. A couple of the signs are lack or dealy in spoken language, little or no eye contact, and lack of make-believe play. When I was researching Asperger Syndrome I learned that children with the disease have a normal IQ and have good skill or talent in a specific area. When I was researching Mark Haddon I thought it was neat that he teaches a creative writing class for the Avron Foundation and Oxford University.

    ReplyDelete
  75. It's very interesting to know what Asperger Syndrome is and what the symptoms are. It unlocks other parts of the human mind of the one that has this syndrome. It may not increase intelligence at a time but it will give the individual a great amount of talent and potential. It may just benifit the person in that perspective. I find after finishing the research about Autism very depressing. With the symtoms such as social behavior problems, or very unusual responses, it is very intriguing to find this disorder. I just wish scientists would be able to find a way to cure such disorders such as Autism and Asperger Syndrome.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I learned that with Asperger's syndrome that the main symptom is severe trouble with social situations. The articles even said that during childhood they may "not pick up on social cues and may lack inborn social skills such as starting or maintaining a conversation. That interested me because I think being social and talking to other people in society is important in order to make new friends and become more outgoing.

    ReplyDelete
  77. i learned what savant syndrome is and its interesting that someone who has those dissabilities can really excell in some topics

    ReplyDelete
  78. I learned that Autism appears in the first 3 years of life. I never knew that if someone was happy, sad, ect, the person with autism wouldn'nt know that specific feeling of that emotion. A good thing you can look at is that people with autism are very smart in math, and arts. So far i am enjoying the book and i cannot wait to finish it and see the ending.

    ReplyDelete
  79. All of the 4 topics four topics interested me in many ways. I was aware of what Autism, and Asperger's was but I was very educated in knowing about Savant Syndrome. Savant Syndrome really interested me because, it doesn't really matter if you’re mentally or physically disable you can still be good at something. It also interests me because Savant Syndrome comes it different categories. The category that stuck out the most to me was the Prodigious Savants, this caught my eye because their ability went beyond people with disabilities, and it went to a level of people such as me and you. So in researching the topics I learned a lot and that anyone disable or non-disable can succeed beyond measures.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I believe that Autism is very sad and challenging. I am intrigued by how autism has increased dramatically since the 1980's. I am also interested by how autism has a strong genetic bases, that makes me wonder what the DNA is like in autism. I am most intigued by how there is no cure to autism. That must really be a challenge for scientists in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I agree with Nathan that Autism is a very sad thing.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I think these diseases are interesting because they effect men more than women, about three to four times more. Also because some of the people effected have extremely high IQ's, but are unable to communicate. I wonder why this is more common in men, and also why someone with an extremely high IQ would have troubles communicating.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I think autism is interesting in many ways. One way is that it can be forming/happening and know one would know it. Parents could probably just think that the child is doing bad in school cause of some other reason, not autism. Although autism may be a disorder, I still think that it makes them special in their own way. I mean most of them are more organized in their daily schedule then I am. Having thoughts in my brain to be organized, is something I always wanted, so autism really isn't that bad.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I honestly didn't know much about Autism before this assignment, so I was especially sad that they can't do anything about fixing it, because they don't know what causes it, therefore, they can't fix it! But autism is a curious condition, I want to learn more about it....

    ReplyDelete
  85. I think these several different conditions we had to research are utterly amazing. The main difference with people like this is that they have a different wiring system when it comes to the nerves and the brain than an average person. Which makes them unique in a magnificent manner. The fact that one article said people with Asperger syndrome usually have an average to an above average vocabulary and intelligence shows that these kids are not dum at all. They are very intelligent beings who are just unable to act out and really express what there feeling. I have went and spent time with fellow teenagers who have these conditions and so realizing that some have all the information in their head but just can't act on it really built my respect for them, which I always had. That book is awesome and I can't wait to learn more...

    ReplyDelete
  86. After reading the article about autism it was interesting because I never really thought about how much people struggle with this problem. It was sad but interesting. It makes me want to help out with these people that are no different from you and me but just need a little more help and care.

    ReplyDelete
  87. What I found most interesting about austim is that parents usually notice signs in the first two years of the child's life. It surprized me because you usually think that even when you are a couple of months to a year old, you already have developed some characteristics. Another thing that caught my attention and that is also known to happen is the fact that people with Asperger syndome excel in fields like computer programming and science, even though they have difficulty socially. I was also amazed that a prodigious savant are rare individuals that have a special skill that is truly amazing, like a prodigy, even though they have some difficulty with other things. I think that people with austism or any type of difference is truly smart, even though they express themselves differently.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I thought savant syndrome was the most interesting beacause people who have this have a mental or physical disability but they also have other spectacular talents. I also found it interesting to find out that the enviornment may cause autism.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I thought autism was interesting and sad. It appears during the first three years of life. It affects development of the brain which results in difficulty of communication which is sad because not only do the autistic have trouble with communication there is no cure so they have to live their whole life like that. It is also estimated that autism occurs in 1 in 500 individuals. That's about 12 million out of 6 billion people in the world. That's pretty shocking.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I also found savant syndrome interesting because along with their serious mental or physical disability they are quite brilliant. For example prodigious savants have a "superior memory" like when they can memorize popular statistics, telephone books, and bus scedules and they are very intelligent when it comes to calculation. They also have the ability to identify the day of the week "upon which a particular date falls."

    ReplyDelete
  91. Even though there is not cure for autism if the children have intensive, early treatment it can help them tremendously. I found this interesting because I didn’t know there was a treatment for autistic kids, and it is very nice to know that there is some kind of treatment to help them. Most people with asperger syndrome usually have a circumscribed area of interest. I thought that is was very peculiar that they never get board with their one interest.

I already knew alot about autism (at least i thought i did). The early indicators which i knew nothing about shocked me. I had no clue that just the little things like smilling, pointing, response to name and so on could determine if a baby would be autistic. And i was liike wooow with all the other syndromes. I never knew there were so many syndromes that could state that you were mentaly retarted (not all of them.

  93. Something i found very interesting. some famous people with autism(i.e. artists, scientists, mathematicians):Albert Einstein,Bill Gates, Mark Twain, Thomas Jefferson, Beethoven, Thomas Edison, Mozart, Van Gogh, Emily Dickinson, Isaac Newton. I never truly understood the aptitude and mental capacities as well as capabilities people, even with autism, had had. The fact that most of them are so ingenious absolutely perplexes and astounds me. And not to sound shallow in any way of the sort of course, i respect them just as any indivual must.

  94. although there are many symptoms for aspergers syndrome the most commen one is severe trouble with social communication. Most symptoms persist through the teen years. And although teens with Asperger's can begin to learn those social skills they lack, communication often remains difficult. children with aspergers syndrome have trouble in school doing work and passing test.

  100. I had seen cases of savant syndrome before but did not know what it was called. There is a man who if you ask him any questions involving mathematics and predicting dates he can give you a correct awnswer. His name is Kim Peek. The kid in the book, christopher is incredibly smart, and I know some people who are like him in many ways. Its amazing the number of different cases that can occur with autism. The variety is unfathomable.

  102. Savant syndrome is different than autism in that it is a literal defect in the brain - the most severe being the formation of one brain hemisphere instead of the normal two. These savants not only have mental and emotional defects, they also have many physical problems. Autism can be the same way, but is less rare. Maybe that's why people think autism makes you live shorter lives.

It's always interesting to hear about savants who can do amazing things, such as a blind man in Europe who can draw any shape just by feeling one side of it. It's a mystery how these things come to be, but also a blessing.

  103. i lovee the book so far..i think its cute.plus it reveals how percise and orderly people with autism can be, which is very interesting to learn about

  104. The book is very good. I like the amount of voice in the story, it keeps it interesting and real. I have learned alot about autism, like its most common in boys but girls can still get it. Also i have learded why the kids that have it do what they do. I think its kool how the people that have it usally have a very special ability, like molding clay to a figure, painting a picture with just feeling it, or playing a musical introment very well. With every down fall comes something uplifting to make up for it.

  105. Aww this book is so cute!! Its really really good so far. And it is really interesting learning about how people with autism are. They can be so particular about things and it is so cool to see how their minds work!!

  106. Autism causes kids to experience the world differently from the way most other kids do. It's hard for kids with autism to talk with other people and express themselves using words. Kids who have autism usually keep to themselves and many can't communicate without special help.

They also may react to what's going on around them in unusual ways. Normal sounds may really bother someone with autism — so much so that the person covers his or her ears. Being touched, even in a gentle way, may feel uncomfortable.

Kids with autism often can't make connections that other kids make easily. For example, when someone smiles, you know the smiling person is happy or being friendly. But a kid with autism may have trouble connecting that smile with the person's happy feelings.

A kid who has autism also has trouble linking words to their meanings. Imagine trying to understand what your mom is saying if you didn't know what her words really mean. It is doubly frustrating then if a kid can't come up with the right words to express his or her own thoughts.

Autism causes kids to act in unusual ways. They might flap their hands, say certain words over and over, have temper tantrums, or play only with one particular toy. Most kids with autism don't like changes in routines. They like to stay on a schedule that is always the same. They also may insist that their toys or other objects be arranged a certain way and get upset if these items are moved or disturbed.

If someone has autism, his or her brain has trouble with an important job: making sense of the world. Every day, your brain interprets the sights, sounds, smells, and other sensations that you experience. If your brain couldn't help you understand these things, you would have trouble functioning, talking, going to school, and doing other everyday stuff. Kids can be mildly affected by autism, so that they only have a little trouble in life, or they can be very affected, so that they need a lot of help.

  107. People with autism have trouble relating to the outside world. They dont really connect well with other people. Certian sounds may bother them, or being touched can be an issue. Some of them tend to use objects to relate to.

People with autism can actually be really smart. They have their own interesting way of thinking. They kind of do things their own way, what best works for them.

Some kids with autism repeat motions, like flapping their arms and making noises. Many of them have a special place for all of the toys and other objects they own. If someone disrupts their order of things they get very angry. They dont know how to deal with things so they often get pyshical.

  108. I'm a bit late on these but, I agree with Autumn. I feel bad for laughing at Angel when I see him playing like dungeons and dragons. But after seeing his skill with clay in class, I rethought. I first thought they were, I don't want to sound mean, "mentally handicapped." Now I realize they can be amazingly smart, it's just the defects they have with being social.

  109. Some interesting facts i learned about autism was the fact that three to six out of a thousand children will have ASD, but that males will be four times more likely than females to receive ASD. Even though these kids have problems socially they are sometimes born with incredible gifts.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I think that it is really cool that some autistic kids have amazing gifts like Angle and his Transformers sculptures is an example. Also i found out that the spectrum for autism is really big.

  111. WHEN LEARNING ABOUT AUTISM I FIND THESE THINGS INTRIGUING. That they may not be able to communicate with you normally but they can grow up to be a rocket scientist of some sort. What i learned about autistic kids is that is there as normal as anyone else on this planet its just they have communication issues.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Some facts that interested me were that you cant communicate with people,im not srue what i would do if i couldnt do that. Also that there is a very big scale of Autism

    ReplyDelete
  113. After reading about autism,I learned several facts that I thought were interesting.
    1. Mostly all boys have autism over girls.
    2. There is not a set cure for autism.
    3. People have autism for there whole lives, they get it when there born.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I learned that autisim is mostly targeted to boys, people get autism at an early age and there is no cure.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I have found that people with Asperger Syndrome can generally process common events faster than the normal human.I learned boys have a greater chance of being diagnosed with autism than others and although many treatments that take place every day, there is still no cure.

  116. When researching about people with this snydrom i have relized that all through history famous people, and great leaders in science and natioal have had these.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I think that autism is strange(in a good and bad way) for the people that can't express themselves with words can still tell you how they felt. And there are many different types of autism, i didn't know that, i thought that every case was the same. But here are levels and groups.

    ReplyDelete
  118. There is no cure but you can help it, i read in a magazine that my mom gets that a GIRL that had autism in the begining was at a lower level and now you can't even tell she has it. She changed drastically.

  119. Autism is a disorder of the mind that effects many people in the world today. For the most part it happens to boys and it is a social disorder and doesn't mean at all that the person is mentally lower than everyone else and they show impressive talents that prove that they may be even mentally stronger.

    ReplyDelete
  120. autism is something like nothing els. there are many types and it ranges in how autistic each pearson with it is. it usually makes anything social very difficult but can make you smarter at other more academic things.

    ReplyDelete
  121. While researching the different forms of autism, I learned that some people with the disease can excel in things involving complex patters such as music, be capable of living alone with minor if any help, and most people can be on the scale of identifying more as social or awkward/introverted and some forms of autism are only visible in the way of being socially awkward. These things interested me because before this, I was under the impression that music and such things would confuse a child with autism, because it is something I view as very much emotional. I also thought that people with autism required 24/7 attention, and they couldn't relate to me at all, but now I know they can appear and function just like anyone else. (Of course, that is only for mild cases or some form of autism.)
